      project brief

greater group recently completed the refurbishment of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited’s (ANZ) Figtree Grove branch in collaboration with Lendlease, a Sydney-based multinational construction, property and infrastructure company. The brief for this retail design project was to refurbish the existing ANZ branch in the Figtree Grove Shopping Centre in New South Wales according to the bank’s latest branch design standards. The goal of bank branch refurbishment projects such as these is to ensure each branch is consistent with the company’s overall visual guidelines, and to maintain the original design intent of expressing the ANZ brand identity. greater group provided end-to-end retail design services from concept design to final rollout details.

greater group and ANZ have been collaborating on multiple design projects in Australia over the past few years, including the full branch design of the Seven Hills Plaza, Buderim and Caneland Central locations — all of these rollouts in partnership with the global real estate services firm, JLL, as project managers. Minor refurbishment projects including the Port Douglas and Coffs Harbours locations with Lendlease as project managers were also completed in this partnership. In 2019, ANZ commissioned greater group to design and deliver a multipurpose pop-up branch format that was piloted in Queensland, challenging the restraints of traditional branch banking design.

      project outcome

The success of the ANZ brand relies on the ability to be presented in a unified manner that resonates with customers across all operating regions and its diverse cultures. At the core of the modern-day omnichannel banking experience is a customer-focused, interactive branch service that caters to all consumer demographics. The ANZ branch banking model is built on the premise of an uncomplicated retail space that will help customers effectively manage their finances anywhere and anytime.

This branch design strategy promotes the wider ANZ customer-centred objective of creating streamlined ways to bank with a strong focus on collaboration between staff and customers. In the design of compact branches like Figtree Grove in Australia, spatial planning is a key component to ensure that the limited space is effectively utilised, achieving maximum functionality per square metre. This approach to bank design enables each branch in the ANZ network to live up to its full potential and deliver the same top-quality products and services despite the smaller physical footprint.

The result of the Figtree Grove refurbishment is a high-functioning space with dedicated customer support zones and a 24-hour lobby with smart ATMs. The branch design facilitates a professional yet warm and welcoming environment where customers can comfortably handle their finances with the support of tech innovation as well as on-site staff, all the while maintaining coherence with the overall ANZ brand identity and visual guidelines.
